Twitter users in Japan set a new world record of 143,199 tweets per second (TPS) by tweeting “balus” during a television broadcast of Hayao Miyazaki’s anime classic Castle in the Sky on Aug. 2.
Twitter confirmed the new world record on Aug. 3, saying that it had beaten the 33,388 TPS mark set, also in Japan, on Jan. 1 when “ake-ome” — a shortened version of ‘Happy New Year’ in Japanese — was tweeted en masse. By comparison, during the royal baby frenzy immediately following the birth of Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first child in July, tweet rates peaked at 25,300 per minute.

Twitter has now reached an old age of 10, as of March 21st, mature in the digital world. While the last few years have not been as easy for the business they still have over 320 million active users.

Every second, on average, around 6,000 tweets are tweeted on Twitter, corresponding to over 350,000 tweets sent per minute, 500 million tweets per day and around 200 billion tweets per year.
It is suggested the number of Tweets per day reached a peak in August 2014 with 661 million. That 30-day sampling period included the World Cup final. In January 2016, there were only 303 million tweets per day, on average, during the 30-day period.
Many commentators note how younger users move to platforms such as Snapchat and Instagram. While older users, often within media and politics, remain.
